First day at school.jpg

Welcome to Scoil Aine Naofa, Loch Cutra, website.

Scoil Aine Naofa is a Catholic co-educational school catering for children from Junior Infants to Sixth Class.

It is situated in the parish of Beagh, approximately 6km South of Gort, Co,Galway. There has been a school on this site since the 1860’s and many distinguished teachers have graced its corridors since, most notably, perhaps Michael Cusack, founding father of the GAA. Michael was appointed the first Headmaster of Lough Cutra by Lord Gough when he was merely 20 years old.

There have been many improvements to the school over the years the latest of which was the addition of an ASD unit in 2017. Mostly recently, the Department of Education and Skills has  granted funding for the building of two 80sq metre classrooms with ensuite toilets and a new Special  Education classroom. Work will commence early 2021. We look forward to that.

We have a current enrolment of 94 pupils, with 4 mainstream teachers, 3 Special Education Teachers, 4 SNAs and a secretary.

We endeavour to stimulate learning by offering a diverse range of activities both curricular and extra-curricular. Our aim is to create a friendly, inviting atmosphere with happy, well-adjusted pupils and highly- dedicated, motivated staff.

Science and Maths Awards 2020

Over the school year 2019-2020 and early this year the children of Lough Cutra took part in the Discover Primary Science and Maths Award. To achieve this award the children had to complete hands-on science activities covering al strands in the Primary Science Curriculum (Living Things, Materials, Energy and Forces and Environmental Awareness and Care). They also needed to engage in activities involving technology, engineering and maths. The children worked very hard both at school and at home during the period of remote learning and they fulfilled all the requirements! They achieved a lovely plaque for the school and a certificate for themselves! Well done to all the children!

Peace Proms, Galway 2020

Our pupils were very fortunate recently to be given the opportunity to participate in the Peace Proms in Galway. It took hours of practice to learn the songs and dances required to be able to take part in this ambitious endeavour , but all agreed that it was wonderfully organised and a great day out for all. Congratulations and well done to all involved

"The only limit to building is your imagination"

As part of the Galway Science and Technology Festival, a K’nex Roadshow visited our school. Seán Cullen was our facilitator and the children thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from the experience.

A workshop on pollination took place in the school on 27th March.

The children learned the importance of pollinators, like bees, in the growth of fruit and vegetables. Did you know, too, that 78% of our wildflowers rely on bees for pollination?

Without bees, we might lose the colourful and distinct natural beauty of our countryside.

It was a very worthwhile experience and the children spent a very pleasant afternoon in the spring sunshine.
