Lough Cutra National School
A workshop on pollination took place in the school on 27th March.
The children learned the importance of pollinators, like bees, in the growth of fruit and vegetables. Did you know, too, that 78% of our wildflowers rely on bees for pollination?
Without bees, we might lose the colourful and distinct natural beauty of our countryside.
It was a very worthwhile experience and the children spent a very pleasant afternoon in the spring sunshine.
Our annual book fair took place the week of the 11th March.
Once again, it was a great success with so many parents purchasing books for their children and other family members. Of course, we all agree the best gift of all is a love of reading.
In addition, as a reward, we receive 50% of the money spent in free books, for the school.
Many thanks to all who organised and supported the fair.
Pancake Day on Shrove Tuesday, March 5th. The pupils from 5th & 6th made pancakes from scratch!
We put our new kitchen and crépe maker to good use and everyone enjoyed themselves before Lent began the following day.
This year the boys and girls from 5th and 6th class learnt a new sport called Spikeball. Spikeball is an introductory form of volleyball and has been in existence just three years. It incorporates many of the skills of volleyball, but adapts the rules to make it more inclusive, easier and FUN for all participants.
Both the girls’ and the boys’ teams competed in the Connacht finals in NUIG.
Although the girls narrowly missed out on a spot in the finals that day, they played extremely well.
However, the boys had a great campaign which resulted in them travelling to the All Ireland Finals on the 21st March in UL. Despite some tough competition, they made it to the quarter finals.
No mean feat for their first year out! Well done to all concerned and especially to Ms Gill for her hard work.
Christmas Concert 2018
Our Christmas concert was held on Thursday 20th December.
Many hours of practice went into learning lines and songs; gathering costumes and constructing sets.
This year, we were lucky enough to have a new Director, Austin, one of our parents, who kindly offered his services. He did a marvellous job and we’re extremely grateful to him.
A whole school carol service preceded the refreshments.
A most enjoyable was had by all.
We were delighted to have the RSA visit the school and give the students some excelent advise about Road Safety
